How to maximize computer gaming performance?

When I’m playing a game like L4D, are there any ways to maximize my computer’s performance? The only thing I know is overclock my gpu. Are there any software that can cleanup my memory or whatever? And are there any processes and programs I should disable?

I dont know about software but there is something i use when playing games on my comp.

If you are using windows XP right click my computer and go to properties
Then the advanced tab
Then under performance click settings
Choose adjust for best performance then click Ok

It wont look pretty but it does make games run faster (well for me at least)

Hope this helps

I have heard of over clocking before but make sure you know a little about it for the most part. If this is a computer for the every day use then the only thing you really can do is go to add remove programs and take off all small games and other programs that are there but you do not use. The processor and RAM is a lot to do with the performance here. If these two things are upgraded then there will not be too much hesitation. If this is vista 64 bit check the setting for 64 bit on the game also.
